Liberty Media completes €4.3 billion takeover of MotoGP and WorldSBK

Two weeks on from receiving unanimous EU approval, Liberty Media Corporation has officially completed its €4.3 billion takeover of Dorna Sports’ MotoGP and WorldSBK championships.

Liberty Media operate and own interests in media, sports and entertainment businesses.

The American company famously bought the rights to Formula 1 in 2017, meaning the organisation now simultaneously owns the largest four and two-wheeled motorsport championship.

Liberty’s primary goal with MotoGP is to expand the sport’s global presence, particularly in niche markets including in North America, where the company is based.

Carlos Ezpeleta will continue as CEO of Dorna, alongside other key members of the existing senior management team.

However, Liberty will be bringing in Chase Carey and Sean Bratches to bolster the senior team, who both made a massive impact in Formula 1’s recent global expansion.

The organisation’s long-term strategy is to replicate the success it saw with Formula 1 in growing the sport to a wide and diverse audience.

Autosport reports that the first meeting between the new board will take place at Dorna’s headquarters in Madrid on Monday, 7th July.

The report states that the meeting will see all parties discuss the first phase of a new plan focused on the commercial side of the championship, including “the sale of broadcasting rights, tickets, advertising, sponsorships, and promoting the series.”
